Brought to you by Grenade
Grenade ambassadors Andrew Porter and Marty Guilfoyle discuss all things nutrition, career, rugby and family life in the first episode of the Grenade 4-part podcast series, Mic’d Up With Marty.
Mental health advocate, Irish rugby legend and now Netflix star, Andrew Porter is a wearer of many hats. His latest role? Flying the flag for Grenade as he joins Marty Guilfoyle for the very first episode of Grenade’s Mic’d Up With Marty.
Each episode sees Marty chat with a different Grenade ambassador, as they talk all things sports, life and wellbeing. They’ll embrace the podcast’s core idea – ‘Not All Mountains Are Mountains’ – and they’ll explore how challenges and goals don’t stop and start on the playing field. The first sporting star in the hot-seat is Andrew Porter.
The duo kicked off the first episode, by travelling back in time, and reflecting on the Irish player’s first experience with the game. Even as a youngster, Andrew has many proud memories of the sport. The first game he remembers was playing a half-time mini game at Old Wesley, an experience that felt like a huge deal as a kid. He also recalls walking out as a mascot with one of his personal rugby heroes, Lee Cullen.
Since those early days, Andrew’s career has gone from strength to strength, but when he recalls major career highlights, he does so humbly, whether that’s his first cap for Ireland in New Jersey or Six Nations triumph.
Later in the episode, Andrew touches upon health, both mental and physical. From his approach to food and nutrition, to understanding that reaching out is a sign of strength, the rugby player’s attitude is super refreshing. He is particularly open in discussing his own experience with grief, and now he hopes the messages he shares on mental health will resonate with others, encouraging them to reach out during tough times.
