Locals were shocked at the discovery of the woman’s body.
A woman in her 60s who is believed to have lain dead in her home in Co. Cork for at least a year, has been named locally.
The badly decomposed body of Joyce ‘Joy’ O’Mahony was discovered in a downstairs room at the two-storey property at Brookfield Lawn in The Lough, Co Cork.
Gardaí do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Locals reported that Ms O’Mahony was not seen in the local area for some time.
Gardaí, the Cork City Fire Brigade and the ambulance service attended at the scene.

It is understood Ms O’Mahony lived alone in the house is predeceased by her father Dr Thomas J O’Mahony, who had a successful GP surgery prior to his death in 2010.
Her mother Patricia, also passed away in a nursing home in January 2021.
Based on items and foodstuffs found inside her house, it has been revealed that Ms O’Mahony was alive up to late 2022.
She was described by locals as a kind but very private person and there was shock among the Cork community when her body was discovered, as her garden had overgrown badly and she was believed to have moved away.
The woman’s body was discovered after pest control services were called to investigate a rodent problem at a nearby home.
The service discovered that Ms O’Mahony’s house was the source of the vermin problem and contacted gardaí after the discovery.
Dental records will be used to formally identify the deceased women and personal items like post and expire dates on foodstuff will be further examined to establish exactly when she passed away.
Phone records and bank statements will also be analysed.
